This is one of the oldest countries in the world and Africa's second-most populous nation. It has yielded some of humanity's oldest traces, making the area important in the history of human evolution. Ethiopia has eighty-four indigenous languages. Amharic is the most popular national language in the country. For many years it was the language of primary school instruction, but has been replaced in many areas by local languages such as Oromifa and Tigrinya. English is the most widely spoken foreign language and is the medium of instruction in secondary schools and a number of media stations.
